Our precious metals are at the heart of everything we do. Pioneers of 'demi-fine', we’ve been championing it since 2008, creating jewellery that’s in-between fashion and fine – iconic design you can wear over and over.
Our main core collections are crafted in recycled gold vermeil, sterling silver, gold plated or silver plated. We now also have our Missoma Fine collection which is crafted from recycled 14ct solid gold. Today, we’re more dedicated to recycled metals than ever before.
Because we never want to waste a scrap of the gold dust that goes into every one of our pieces (excuse the pun). Why mine the earth – with all the damage that it brings – when we could recycle what we already have, with just as much shine?
18ct Gold Vermeil
Pronounced ‘ver-may’, it’s the design and durability you love without the pure gold price tag. Gold vermeil pieces start out as a sterling silver base (this is what gives them their weightier feel and high-end finish). A thick 2.5 microns of real gold is then layered over the top of the base through electrolysis (essentially an electrical current), to give each piece extra durability.
Our sterling silver is 100% recycled, plus ⅚ out of our factories use recycled gold plating to give a more sustainable layering for our gold vermeil jewellery. We’re working with the sixth to cross the finishing line.
18ct Gold Plated
All of our gold plated pieces are plated onto brass. In the same method as vermeil, they are then electroplated with two microns of gold. None of our gold plated pieces are 'flash plated,' 'dipped' or 'gold-tone' – they have a thicker 18ct gold layer to ensure these larger styles will stand the test of time.
Like with our gold vermeil, ⅚ out of our factories are using recycled gold plating. Our goal for 2022 is to 100% ace our base with recycled brass, too. We’re working with our suppliers to make this dream a reality.
Recycled Solid 14ct Gold
Our Missoma Fine collection is crafted with recycled 14ct solid gold. The refinery that provides our recycled gold is chain-of-custody certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council. This means we have assurance and integrity when we use the term ‘recycled gold’.
Recycled Sterling Silver
From October 2021, 100% of our new silver collections are made from recycled sterling silver. Our recycled sterling silver is chain-of-custody certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council.
925 sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. We plate our silver jewellery in rhodium, which gives it extra shine and durability. Rhodium is one of the costliest precious metals due to its rarity. All of our sterling silver pieces are stamped with “925” to certify their authenticity.
Sterling Silver Plated
Our sterling-silver plated pieces are plated with sterling silver on brass with a layer of anti-tarnish on top. These pieces are still incredibly durable and plated with exactly the same process as our sterling silver, however they are not marked with a '925' stamp as they are not 92.5% pure silver.

How To Take Care of Your Missoma Metals
That soft-lined pouch that came in your 100% recyclable Missoma packaging? Reuse it to store your jewellery pieces individually so they don’t rub together, scratch or tangle.
Your gold vermeil and silver jewellery should be kept in a dark, cool and dry place. Living in a humid environment? Store your jewellery with a small packet of desiccant crystals to help reduce tarnishing.
